On Holy Tuesday, the Church reflects on two parables related to the Second Coming.
The first parable is about the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-3), and the second is about the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30). These parables emphasize the importance of spiritual vigilance, stewardship, accountability, and judgment in preparation for the Parousia.
These parables teach us two important lessons. Firstly, Judgment Day will come unexpectedly, much like the bridesmaids in the parable who were either prepared or unprepared. It is crucial to choose God now and not delay. The responsibility for being excluded from God’s kingdom lies with individuals, not with God.
Secondly, readiness for the Second Coming does not mean simply going through the motions of religious obligations. It requires inner strength, sobriety, tranquility, joy, and a keen spiritual awareness. Watchfulness involves a deep commitment to following God’s will, embracing virtues, and guarding against evil.
