The Orthodox Church honors Saint Publius, Bishop of Malta and later Bishop of Athens, and Hieromartyr Marios, Bishop of Sebasteia, today.
It also observes the translation of the holy relics of Saint Nikiforos, Patriarch of Constantinople.
Saint Nikiforos became Patriarch of Constantinople in 806 AD, but was forced into exile by Emperor Leo V due to his stance on icon veneration. After returning to Constantinople and refusing to compromise his beliefs, he left the city once again. He passed away on June 2, 828 AD.
Following the restoration of icon veneration, Patriarch Methodius led the translation of Saint Nikiforos’ relics from a monastery to Constantinople, where they were placed in the Great Church and later in the Church of the Holy Apostles on March 13, the date of his exile.
