The Story of Moses: A Diamond in a Cesspool
The Egypt of our ancestors was a society engulfed in moral depravity and decadence. Despite the darkness that surrounded them, the story of Moses shines as a beacon of hope and greatness.
As a baby, Moses faced the threat of death due to Pharaoh’s cruel decree to kill all newborn Jewish boys. His mother, in a desperate act of love, placed him in a basket and set him afloat on the river, where he was discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter.
Rabbi Ovadia Sforno explains that Moses stood out among the discarded children of Egypt because of his exceptional beauty and inner goodness. Pharaoh’s daughter recognized his uniqueness and chose to raise him as her own.
Despite the corrupt environment he was born into, Moses was destined for greatness. His story teaches us to rise above our circumstances and let our inner light shine brightly, just like the diamond in the cesspool.
May we all find the strength to embrace our true selves and overcome the challenges around us, just as Moses did. Shabbat Shalom.
