In November of this year, the Greek Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Kolkata celebrated its 100th anniversary at its current location.
On Sunday, December 8, 2024, we marked this milestone and also inaugurated the church.
The original church’s foundation stone was laid in 1780, and it was consecrated in 1782. In 1923, the Greek community made the decision to relocate the church to another area of the city. The new church was finished in 1924, and its doors were opened in November of the same year.
Following the service, a memorial was held for the church’s founders, benefactors, and the once thriving Greek community in Kolkata.
Later in the day, a celebration took place featuring speeches on the history and importance of the Greek Church in Kolkata. Children from our charitable organizations performed Byzantine hymns and traditional Indian dances in the church’s courtyard.
The events were attended by a significant number of individuals, including the Ambassador of Greece in New Delhi, Ms. Aliki Koutsoumitopoulou, the Consul of the Greek Embassy, Mr. Dimitrios Sideris, the Consul of Cyprus in India, as well as other dignitaries and religious figures.
The evening ceremony was graced by the presence of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Kolkata, along with representatives from various religious backgrounds.
Local radio and television stations covered the festivities, highlighting the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior as a notable landmark in Kolkata.
