Monday, October 7, 2024, marked the celebration of the memory of the Holy First Martyr and Apostle Thecla by the Patriarchate.
This feast commemorates Saint Thecla, who hailed from Iconion in Asia Minor and was instructed in the Christian faith by the Apostle Paul. She followed him on his tours and endured many tortures due to her faith in Christ. Despite the challenges, she remained steadfast and continued to work miracles and spread the teachings of Christ in her homeland until she passed away at the age of ninety.
Saint John of Damascus composed a canon in her honor, which is found in the book of Minaion.
The memory of Saint Thecla was honored at her chapel in the Central Monastery with Vespers on Sunday afternoon. The service was led by Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem, accompanied by other clergy members. A traditional treat with sweet wine and dried bread was served in the courtyard following the celebration.
The following morning, the Divine Liturgy was conducted by Archimandrite Alexios, with Patriarch Theophilos in attendance. The service was well-attended by monks, nuns, and Orthodox Christians from the Church of Jerusalem. Patriarch Theophilos extended his wishes for the intercessions of Saint Thecla to guide the Holy Fathers in their mission.
