The commemoration of our Holy Father Onuphrius of Egypt was celebrated on Tuesday, June 25th, 2024, by the Patriarchate in the Holy Monastery named after him in the site south of Siloam’s pool and in the place of Alcedama. The Divine Liturgy was presided over by Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem, with several other clergy members in attendance.
Saint Onuphrius, known for his extreme fasting and prayer in the desert for sixty years, was honored on this day. He was found by the monk Paphnutius, who buried him and covered him with his garment. Saint Paul’s teachings on putting off the old self and putting on the new man were reflected upon during the celebration.
Onuphrius was praised for his ascetic life, emulating great prophets like Elijah and John the Forerunner. The psalmist’s words were recited, highlighting the importance of clean hands and a pure heart in seeking the Lord. The righteousness of the saints, including Onuphrius, was emphasized, as they are promised a crown of righteousness from the Lord.
The faithful were encouraged to love the appearing of Christ, as this love leads to receiving the Father and the Son. The guidance and illumination of the Holy Spirit were seen in Onuphrius, who loved God with all his heart and mind. The call to love the Son of God through the intercessions of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Apostles was reiterated, as Onuphrius set an example of godliness and virtue. The celebration concluded with a prayer for the righteous Father Onuphrius.
Many and peaceful returns!”
Following that, a Trisayon was held to pray for the soul of the departed nun from the Monastery Serafima Euthymiadou. The blessing for the start of the harvest season was then given at the Tomb of the Monastery’s Founder, Hieromonk Kyrillos.
To conclude the day, the diligent and caring Nun Paisia, the abbess of the monastery, treated everyone to a festive feast and provided much-needed refreshment in the heat of the day.
