The Feast of Epiphany in Alexandria: A Day of Divine Light
Every year, the Feast of Epiphany in Alexandria shines its divine light on Orthodox Christian faithful. The azure sky and the historical journey of Hellenism in the land of the Nile create a brilliant atmosphere that fills everyone with anticipation. The celebration reaches its peak as pure white doves, symbolizing the Holy Spirit, are released by Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa.
This moment is not only significant for Egyptian Hellenism but also resonates with the global Greek diaspora, historically connected to the Great City. The day begins with the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, where Pope and Patriarch Theodore II delivers a message of hope and renewal for the new year.
Attending the Liturgy were distinguished guests from Greece, including Deputy Minister of Defense Mr. Ioannis Achilles Kefalogiannis and General Dimitrios Choupi. The Patriarch honored them with prestigious Patriarchal orders, emphasizing the historic ties between Greece and Egypt.
The celebration continued with a reception for the Governor of Alexandria and his delegation, highlighting the strong bonds between Greece and Egypt. The day concluded at the Hellenic Naval Club with the blessing of the waters and the release of a white dove symbolizing peace and divine grace.
The day’s events ended with a reception at the Naval Club, featuring speeches from the Patriarch, local dignitaries, and Greek representatives, celebrating the spiritual significance of the day.
The celebration of Hellenism in Egypt was beautifully captured through the exchange of gifts, the cutting of the New Year’s Vasilopita, and heartfelt interactions among attendees. These gestures highlighted the unity and shared heritage of the community. The event was documented by Grigorios Chaliakopoulos through text and photos.
