The Orthodox Church, particularly the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, celebrated the Sunday of Orthodoxy on the First Sunday of the Holy and Great Lent, 9th March 2025, at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
This day commemorates the restoration of holy icons under Emperor Michael, Empress Theodora, and Patriarch Methodius, after centuries of persecution by Iconoclasts. The Church honors those who defended the icons and taught the faithful the distinction between Orthodoxy and heresy.
Vespers: The Seventh Ecumenical Council confirmed the importance of this event in 843 AD. Vespers were held at the Church of the Resurrection, with Patriarch Theophilos leading the ceremony.
Feast Day: The Divine Liturgy took place at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, with Patriarch Theophilos and other clergy participating. A procession of holy icons followed the service.
In a speech, Patriarch Theophilos emphasized the significance of venerating icons and the importance of the incarnation and resurrection in the Christian faith.
