The relics of St. Demetrius the New, Protector of Bucharest, were paraded through the streets of Bucharest on Friday evening in a grand procession. This event took place on the eve of the first celebration of the Feast of the Translation of the Relics of St. Demetrius the New to the capital city of Romania.
This feast was recently added to the Romanian Orthodox Church calendar and is observed on July 13. This year marks the 250th anniversary since the saint’s relics were brought to the capital city of Romania.
Prior to the procession, an All-night Vigil service was conducted by His Grace Timotei of Prahova, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest, along with abbots from the monasteries in the archdiocese.
Upon the return of the relics from the procession, they were received at the outdoor altar near the Patriarchal Cathedral by Patriarch Daniel, hierarchs of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, and His Eminence Metropolitan Naum of Ruse, the Bulgarian diocese where St. Demetrius resided.
“The presence of the relics of Saint Demetrius the New in Bucharest for two and a half centuries demonstrates the grace and blessing that God bestows through His saints upon those who pray to Him with faith, displaying God’s love for His faithful people. It is also a tangible proof of the faithful’s devotion to God, Who is Wonderful in His saints (Psalm 67:36),” stated Patriarch Daniel of Romania.
“For two and a half centuries, the relics of Saint Demetrius the New have served as a shield, a source of joy and peace, comfort, and blessings for the residents of Bucharest and all the faithful who have sought him in their prayers, with the saint’s miracles stemming from compassionate love for those in suffering,” the Patriarch of Romania emphasized.
“We extend our congratulations to all those involved in the successful organization of this celebration, which has brought together parishes, monasteries, clergy, laity, church servants, gendarmes, and especially the guiding gendarmes.”
“Furthermore, we congratulate all those who participated in the procession on the Feast of the Translation of the Relics of Saint Demetrius the New to Bucharest this evening. We pray to God to grant everyone health, happiness, peace, and joy through the intercession of Saint Demetrius the New, assistance in their families and endeavors, with many years of blessings, growth in faith and Christian love, in sanctity and good deeds, for the glory of the Most Holy Trinity, for the delight of the saints, and for the attainment of salvation!” concluded Patriarch Daniel.
The celebratory events on the Patriarchate Hill, commemorating 250 years since the Translation of the Relics of St. Demetrius the New to Bucharest, continued on Saturday with the Divine Liturgy, presided over at the outdoor altar by Patriarch Daniel, alongside Metropolitan Naum of Ruse and other Romanian hierarchs.
