On November 12, 2024, Serbian Patriarch Porfirije delivered a speech at the fifth bilateral interfaith dialogue between Serbia and Indonesia, titled “Dialogue for Peace: Tolerance and Culture,” held at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade. This annual dialogue, organized by Indonesia for over three decades with countries worldwide, fosters mutual understanding and cooperation. The first Serbia-Indonesia dialogue took place in Belgrade in 2011, followed by subsequent gatherings in Jakarta, Belgrade, and Yogyakarta.
In his speech, Patriarch Porfirije highlighted the importance of interfaith dialogue, emphasizing that it is not a tool for conversion or exclusivity but a means to build understanding and mutual respect. He explained that such dialogue allows people of different faiths to come together, learn, and overcome prejudices. “True interfaith dialogue acknowledges our identities as believers and accepts the other,” he said, adding that “each person is a gift from God.”
Patriarch Porfirije underscored that the goal of interfaith dialogue is to bridge gaps, create understanding, and recognize both differences and similarities among people of faith. By fostering dialogue, he noted, participants work to overcome doubts and misconceptions and celebrate shared values.
He also highlighted the unique nature of the partnership between Serbia and Indonesia, countries at opposite ends of the globe. “This platform for dialogue shows there are no distances between people if we truly seek to understand one another, knowing that every human being, made in God’s image, is worthy of respect, acceptance, and understanding,” Patriarch Porfirije concluded.
Through this dialogue, he stressed the commitment to peace, education, culture, and collaboration—values essential to achieving global harmony.
