Serbian Patriarch Porfirije participated in the ceremonial academy “From Century to Century” yesterday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Radio Belgrade. During his speech, the Patriarch emphasized the significant role of media in shaping the cultural and moral values of society, citing the Gospel to highlight the Church’s mission. He stressed the media’s responsibility to the people and the state, quoting Jesus Christ: “What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops.” These words reflect the Church’s mission and its approach to modern media.
The Patriarch also recalled the beginning of electronic media in Serbia a century ago with the first broadcast of Radio Belgrade. He mentioned the consecration of the dispatch radio-telegraph station in Rakovica in July 1923, symbolizing the media workers’ desire to commence their mission with the Church’s blessing and prayers.
Patriarch Porfirije praised the media for enhancing communication and collaboration among different social groups, promoting mutual respect, unity, and societal advancement. He recognized the media as a crucial instrument of the nation’s culture and commended Radio Belgrade’s century-long legacy, transforming it into a cultural institution.
