The Romanian Patriarchate has officially distanced itself from Archbishop Teodosie of Tomis’ statements made during an interview with Le Figaro regarding Mr. Călin Georgescu and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In the interview, Archbishop Teodosie expressed his support for presidential candidate Călin Georgescu, who holds eurosceptic and pro-Russian views. He compared Georgescu to Donald Trump, stating that he has the courage to speak about peace. Additionally, the Archbishop praised Putin for being a man of reconciliation and for his contributions to building churches.
Regarding Călin Georgescu, Archbishop Teodosie emphasized his support, describing him as a man of God who defends Christian values and cares about the well-being of Romanians. He stated that many believers share the same respect for Georgescu and view him as a messenger of God.
The Holy Synod will review Archbishop Teodosie’s case at their upcoming working session for repeatedly violating decisions regarding involvement in electoral campaigns. Since 2008, the Romanian Orthodox Church has prohibited clergy members from engaging in partisan politics or supporting candidates during elections.
The Romanian Orthodox Church reiterates its stance of neutrality during electoral campaigns and emphasizes its separation from partisan politics.
