The ancient thousand-year-old shrine of the Orthodox Church, Saint Sophia of Kyiv, will be crowned with a newly restored cross tomorrow, to be installed on the cathedral’s highest dome. At the end of last year, this 150 kg cross was removed for restoration due to its deteriorating condition. Today, it was consecrated by Metropolitan Epiphany, the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, following its renewal using unique ancient minting restoration technology.
The Primate expressed his gratitude to the patrons and benefactors, particularly the Sokolov family, who contributed to the noble cause of restoring this historic shrine. “Saint Sophia of Kyiv, which has stood in the heart of Kyiv for over a thousand years, is a special place for us and a witness to many important events in Ukrainian history. Now, you and I are also writing its next page – a heroic one, defending our Motherland from the aggressor neighbor in this difficult time of war,” Metropolitan Epiphany stressed.
He also reminded that other three-meter crosses of Saint Sophia were recently restored and installed. The central cross, the seventh in number, will complete this significant restoration mission. Soon, it will illuminate our capital with its gilding, spiritually protecting Kyiv and all of Ukraine from all evil.
