Following her release from captivity in Gaza, Emily Damari’s injured hand quickly became a symbol of resilience in Israel.
Damari was shot and taken hostage by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7, 2023, resulting in the loss of her ring and middle fingers on her left hand. After her release on the first day of a ceasefire, a photograph released by the Israeli government confirmed her injuries.
Supporters began to add bandages to the “rock on” emoji, mirroring Damari’s hand configuration, turning her injury into a symbol of defiance. Her mother, Mandy, embraced the emoji on social media and shared a photo of her daughter proudly displaying her wounded hand.
Thank you to everyone in the UK and around the world who supported the campaign to bring Emily home, and for all your messages here on X. You are amazing and we love you all 🤟

The symbol gained traction, with Israeli artist Aviad Amergi creating a sticker for WhatsApp featuring the bandaged hand. Other adaptations included a drawing of Damari’s hands in a Jewish blessing and an Israeli soccer player making the sign after a victory.
Additionally, the symbol has been tattooed on at least one individual’s leg, further solidifying its significance in Israeli culture.
The gesture is now seen as a sign of resilience, standing alongside other symbols of strength in the face of adversity. It serves as a reminder of survival and bravery in the aftermath of the traumatic events of Oct. 7.
As Damari embraced her newfound symbol, she shared a message of love and gratitude on social media, signifying her return to a beloved life. The “rock on” emoji concluded her post, encapsulating her spirit of perseverance.
