The Romanian Patriarchate expresses regret and sadness over the inability to hold services in the Romanian language at Chernivtsi’s Chapel of the Bukovina Metropolitans. The chapel, historically known for Romanian language services, is now closed, prompting solidarity with Orthodox Romanians in Chernivtsi who seek its reopening for Romanian religious services.
Despite not belonging to the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Romanian clergy and believers in Chernivtsi are concerned about the chapel’s closure by Ukrainian authorities. The Romanian Patriarchate calls for intervention to ensure religious freedom for Romanian Orthodox Christians in Chernivtsi.
The “Holy Three Hierarchs” Chapel in Chernivtsi holds cultural and historical significance for the Romanian community, with Romanian hierarchs and Metropolitans of Bukovina buried in its crypt. The chapel was sealed by Chernivtsi City Hall in 2024, revoking its assignment to a local parish.
