The commemoration of Prophet Elijah of Thesbes was celebrated by the Patriarchate of Jerusalem on Friday, August 2, 2024.
The Church honours Prophet Elijah as a hermit and ascetic, zealous for God’s rights, who performed many signs and wonders. His memory was celebrated in his Holy Monastery between Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
Vespers was led by Archbishop Theodosios of Sebastia in the evening, while Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem presided over the Divine Liturgy in the morning. The service was attended by various clergy and believers from different regions.
In his sermon, the Patriarch highlighted Prophet Elijah’s righteous life and powerful prayers, emphasizing the importance of faith and prayer in the Christian journey.
Prophet Elijah’s encounter with God on Mount Horeb and his unwavering faith serve as an example for all believers. His humility and devotion to God’s will are virtues to be emulated by all, as highlighted by various saints and biblical figures.
Ultimately, Prophet Elijah’s life teaches us the importance of living righteously and walking in the ways of God, always seeking repentance and striving to do good to others.
According to Saint Chrysostom, God’s providence of love works to humble His chosen ones before pride takes hold. Saint Paul’s acknowledgment of a “thorn in the flesh” serves as a reminder to stay grounded (2 Cor. 12:7). The zeal and predisposition of Elijah’s heart led to his great gifts, as Saint Paul and Saint Gregory of Nissa emphasize. By emulating Elijah’s Godly life, one can draw closer to God in Christ. The Divine Liturgy was followed by a reception at the monastery, hosted by Monk Achilios. Images from the event can be viewed above. Let us seek the intercession of Elijah and the Blessed Virgin Mary for the vision of God and the acquisition of virtues. Amen.
