On March 2, 2025, Serbian Patriarch Porfirije presided over the Divine Liturgy on Forgiveness Sunday at the Church of Saint Sava in Vračar. During the service, he ordained Deacon Nemanja Kalem to the priesthood.
In his sermon, Patriarch Porfirije reflected on the significance of fasting, drawing inspiration from the teachings of the Apostle Paul. He emphasized the importance of not judging others based on their fasting practices and encouraged a spirit of understanding and acceptance.
He cautioned against the hypocritical behavior of the Pharisees, who sought recognition and rewards for their religious observances. Instead, he urged believers to approach fasting as a means of deepening their spiritual connection with God and showing love towards others.
Patriarch Porfirije underlined the need for humility and sincerity in fasting, emphasizing that it should be a personal expression of devotion rather than a way to boast or seek praise.
Following the Divine Liturgy, the Patriarch delivered a heartfelt message to the congregation, highlighting the importance of forgiveness as they entered the solemn period of Great Lent. He encouraged unity and spiritual growth, leading towards the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
He reiterated the Gospel’s message of mutual forgiveness and reconciliation, asking for forgiveness from the congregation and emphasizing the transformative power of love in uniting believers in Christ.
