Patriarch Daniel of Romania Celebrates 73rd Birthday
On Monday, July 22, Patriarch Daniel of Romania turned 73. He has been holding Romania’s patriarchal see for 17 years, bringing over three decades of hierarchical experience to his role.
Originally from the village of Dobrești, Timiș County, Patriarch Daniel was born on July 22, 1951, as the third child of teacher Alexie and Stela Ciobotea.
Early Life of Patriarch Daniel
During his childhood, Patriarch Daniel experienced the challenges of the Stalinist era, where his father worked in the fields and served as a village teacher. Despite the difficult times, his mother instilled in him a strong faith through prayer, fasting, and regular church attendance.
After attending schools in various locations, Patriarch Daniel pursued higher education at the Orthodox Theological University Institute in Sibiu, followed by doctoral studies in theology in Bucharest and Strasbourg.
Monastic Life and Episcopate
In 1987, Dan-Ilie Ciobotea entered monastic life as Daniel under the guidance of Saint Cleopas of Sihăstria. Three years later, he was ordained as a bishop and served as the Vicar Bishop of the Archdiocese of Timișoara before becoming the Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bukovina in 1990.
Seventeen Years as Patriarch
Since September 30, 2007, Patriarch Daniel has been leading the Romanian Orthodox Church. His tenure has seen the church navigate various challenges, including historical wounds, technological advancements, and global crises like the coronavirus pandemic.
Under his leadership, the National Cathedral was consecrated, fulfilling a long-standing Romanian dream. Patriarch Daniel has also overseen the canonization of over 40 Romanian saints and established the Basilica Media Centre.
Celebrating 73 Years
To celebrate his 73rd birthday, a Te Deum service was held at the Patriarchal Cathedral. An official celebration is held on September 30 each year to mark his enthronement as Patriarch.
