April 27, 2023 saw a Divine Liturgy officiated by Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem in the Holy Monastery of Martha and Mary, the sisters of Lazarus in Bethany. Metropolitan Isychios of Capitolias and Archbishop Aristarchos of Constantina co-celebrated with the Patriarch, while the chanting was delivered by Eustathios Tsoumanis and Monk Joseph from Mount Athos. The service was attended by the Consul General of Greece in Jerusalem, Dimitrios Angelosopoulos, Consul Anna Mantika, local faithful, and pilgrims.
“O Lord Thy voice destroyed the dominion of hell, and the word of Thy power raised from the tomb him that had been four days dead; and Lazarus became the saving first-fruits of the regeneration of the world,” the hymnographer of the Church proclaims.
Beloved brethren in Christ,
Reverend Christians and pilgrims,
The grace of the Holy Spirit has gathered us in Bethany to celebrate the raising of Lazarus from the dead, a miraculous event that showcased the power of Christ’s divinity.
According to Saint John the Evangelist, Martha expressed her faith in Jesus, acknowledging that if He had been present, her brother Lazarus would not have died. Jesus, in turn, proclaimed Himself as the resurrection and the life, offering eternal life to those who believe in Him.
As we reflect on Christ’s words, we are reminded by Saint Augustine and Saint Cyril of Alexandria that belief in Christ leads to spiritual life and resurrection. The resurrection of Lazarus served as a preview of Christ’s impending Passion, death, and resurrection.
Christ’s command to Lazarus to come forth demonstrated His divine power over death, foreshadowing His own resurrection and the general resurrection of all believers. Through His resurrection, Christ offers freedom from the corruption of sin and the promise of eternal life.
Today, as we gather in Bethany, let us anticipate the General Resurrection through the intercessions of the Theotokos, Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. May we witness Christ’s Passion and glorious Resurrection, celebrating His victory over death. Amen.
A procession around the Monastery followed the service, with Abbess Eupraxia hosting a reception in the rectory. The Mayor of the Municipality of Bethany was the guest of honor at the event.
Following the reception, a procession to the tomb of Lazarus was led by Metropolitan Isychios of Capitolias, where the Gospel narrative of Lazarus’ resurrection was read. The feast concluded with a return to the Patriarchate Headquarters.
