Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel delivered a heartfelt homily at the memorial service on the first anniversary of the blessed passing of late Patriarch Neofit.
Reflecting on the pain of saying goodbye to loved ones, Patriarch Daniel acknowledged the inevitable sorrow that comes with parting from those who are dear to us: “Every parting from those we love—and who hold a special place in our hearts—inevitably brings pain and sorrow. We grieve their departure from our lives and our world, and with time we become ever more aware of their absence.”
He reassured the faithful that while physical separation may intensify our yearning, the bonds of love remain unbroken. Patriarch Daniel emphasized the enduring nature of spiritual connection, stating: “In our thoughts and prayers, we continue to converse with them, recalling their words, their guidance, the fellowship we shared, and the love with which they embraced us in life—a love that, regardless of our earthly and temporary separation, endures, for true love in Christ conquers death and lasts into eternity.”
Paying tribute to Patriarch Neofit’s radiant character, Patriarch Daniel highlighted the lasting impact of his predecessor’s life and ministry. He expressed: “All of these sentiments—and much more—we associate with the luminous person of our late, dearly beloved Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia, Neofit.”
Quoting from the Gospel, Patriarch Daniel affirmed the living essence of faith: “We confess and believe that our God ‘is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to Him all are alive’ (Luke 20:38).”
In a spirit of unity, the congregation joined in prayer for the peaceful repose of Patriarch Neofit’s soul.
The Patriarch fondly remembered Neofit as a man of unwavering faith and humility, a spiritual shepherd known for his rare ability to bring people together and heal. Describing him as a devoted and loving archpastor, a steadfast mentor in God’s truth and salvation, and a tireless advocate for ecclesiastical unity, Patriarch Daniel emphasized the forgiving nature of his predecessor. He encouraged everyone to follow Neofit’s example of forgiveness, quoting the words of Luke 6:37: “… forgive, and you will be forgiven.” The Patriarch concluded his homily with a prayer for divine mercy and eternal peace, asking for the intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God, the beloved martyr Neofit, and all the saints to grant rest to Patriarch Neofit in God’s Kingdom of light, peace, and joy.
