“Christ is born! Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men!” With these words, Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria extended his Christmas greetings to the staff of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria. He wished them the joy of Christ’s Nativity and hoped that God’s love would abound in society, especially as the Christian world approaches one of its brightest celebrations.
During his visit, Patriarch Daniel met with Ms. Yordanka Chobanova, Head of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria, and her team. The discussion focused on potential collaboration between the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria.
“Values of love and understanding need to shine more prominently in our society. Bulgaria has much to showcase. We boast magnificent monasteries and should take pride as European citizens who have contributed to Europe’s spiritual and cultural heritage,” Ms. Chobanova stated.
Patriarch Daniel emphasized the importance of initiatives that serve the Bulgarian people, especially during a time when societal values are facing challenges. He remarked, “Currently, we are witnessing a crisis of values, as we elevate man above all else. Yet, God has given us the ultimate measure of love – the incarnation of His Son and His sacrificial death on the Cross for humanity’s salvation.”
The meeting also explored ways to work with young people, adolescents, and various societal groups. Both sides agreed that fostering understanding, dialogue, and love is vital for the spiritual strength of the Bulgarian nation.
“For Christians, communion with God is a reality, and they do not question His existence because they genuinely feel His grace. The spiritual struggle against sin is not easy, requiring steadfastness and devotion to God,” Patriarch Daniel added.
The Patriarch wished Ms. Chobanova and her team a joyful and blessed celebration of Christ’s Nativity and a successful new year in 2025. Patriarch Daniel was accompanied by Bishop Gerasim of Melnik, Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod.
