The 130th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the Nevrokop Diocese concluded with a memorial service in honor of Metropolitan Nathanael, led by Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria. Clergy and Orthodox Christians gathered to remember the late spiritual leader, reflecting on his dedication and contributions to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
In his address, Patriarch Daniel praised Metropolitan Nathanael’s efforts to secure recognition for the Church during challenging times, particularly during the schism of 1992–2004. He highlighted Nathanael’s unwavering faith, dedication, and teachings, emphasizing the importance of living a Christ-centered life.
The memorial service was attended by Metropolitan Gregory of Peristeri, Metropolitan Seraphim of Nevrokop, Metropolitan Naum of Strumica, Metropolitan Gregory of Vratsa, and other bishops and clergy. Hymns were performed by the Hieromonk Neofit Rilski Choir.
Personal memories of Metropolitan Nathanael’s commitment to the unity of the Orthodox Church were shared by Metropolitan Gregory Papathomas, who recalled Nathanael’s advocacy for the canonical Church. Metropolitan Seraphim expressed gratitude for the commemoration of the diocese’s anniversary and the lasting impact of Nathanael’s leadership.
The three-day celebrations included a requiem service at Metropolitan Nathanael’s grave, honoring the enduring spiritual foundation of the Nevrokop Diocese. The legacy of Metropolitan Nathanael continues to inspire devout clergy and faithful Christians both in Bulgaria and abroad.
