Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa expressed deep sadness upon learning about the passing of Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durres, and All Albania. In a heartfelt message, he extended condolences on behalf of the Hierarchy, clergy, and faithful of the Apostolic and Patriarchal Throne of Alexandria to the Holy Synod, clergy, monastic communities, and Orthodox followers of the Autocephalous Church of Albania.
Patriarch Theodore praised the late Archbishop as “a dedicated servant of the Gospel,” who brought new life to the Albanian Orthodox Church, comparing him to a “brave Cyrenean” who carried the Church’s burdens. He commended Anastasios as “a teacher, a baptizer, a spiritual guide, and a significant leader” whose ministry transformed a spiritually barren land into a thriving center of faith.
The passing of Archbishop Anastasios deeply impacted Africa, with mournful bells ringing and prayers offered in various languages in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania—regions where Anastasios served as Archbishop of Kenya and Irinoupolis from 1981 to 1991, laying the groundwork for missionary and pastoral work.
The Patriarch emphasized that the Church of Alexandria, facing challenges similar to those in the Acts of the Apostles, holds Anastasios’ memory in high regard. “We offer gratitude for his soul, which inspired faith throughout the African continent,” he said.
In conclusion, Patriarch Theodore prayed for the selection of a deserving successor by the Holy Synod of the Church of Albania, someone capable of carrying on the spiritual legacy and impressive infrastructure established by Archbishop Anastasios, whom he described as a rare spiritual leader who exemplified the joy of the Resurrection.
