Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew witnessed a hopeful vision for the future of Orthodoxy in Australia during a Youth Parade held in Melbourne on Sunday, October 13, following the historic Patriarchal Divine Liturgy at Margaret Court Arena. The parade, brimming with vibrant energy, featured a proud Greek girl leading the march, symbolizing the steadfast connection between the younger generation and their Greek Orthodox roots. The Patriarch, accompanied by Archbishop Makarios of Australia and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, looked on as a hundred white doves were released to commemorate the centenary of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia and everyone exclaimed with enthusiasm: “We are ready for the future!”
In a heartfelt address, Archbishop Makarios expressed gratitude to the young participants and emphasized the importance of the Patriarch’s visit, as well as the Prime Minister’s honorary presence, as moments to showcase the Greek Orthodox identity, which enriches both Melbourne and the wider Australian nation. He highlighted the key role the Ecumenical Patriarchate has played over the past century as a guiding light for the Greek Orthodox community in Australia, ensuring unity, spiritual nourishment, and cultural preservation.
Archbishop Makarios further praised the strong relationship between Australia and the Greek Orthodox community, particularly noting Prime Minister Albanese’s openness in expressing his friendship and admiration for the Greek people. “He is our friend and we are his friends,” the Archbishop remarked.
Concluding his speech, Archbishop Makarios reassured Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew that, as the Holy Archdiocese of Australia enters its second century, it does so with optimism, rooted in faith, the unwavering support of the Mother Church, and the strength of the younger generation poised to take on future responsibilities.
