George Tsiappourdhi was ordained to the Holy Diaconate at the Church of the Holy Trinity and St. Luke in Birmingham on Saturday, 20th April 2024.
Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain presided over Matins and the Divine Liturgy, with several clergy members participating in the ordination ceremony. George expressed his gratitude and humility towards God, Archbishop Nikitas, and all those present, acknowledging his unworthiness for the “double blessing” of ordination to the priesthood the following day. He emphasized his commitment to serving with humility and love, recognizing the need for more priests in the archdiocese.
In his speech, George thanked his family, clergy, monastics, teachers, and friends for their support throughout his journey to ordination. He highlighted the significant personal growth and spiritual development he experienced, crediting his family’s patience and his spiritual father, Father John Nankivell, for their guidance. George also praised his wife, Hilda Georgia, for her unwavering support and love.
Archbishop Nikitas offered advice to George, encouraging him to face challenges with courage and to embody simplicity and humility in his ministry. He emphasized the blessing of receiving both degrees of the priesthood within two days, highlighting the grace bestowed upon George and his family.
Fr George’s swift progression is seen as particularly auspicious, allowing him the blessing of celebrating the Joyful Feast of Pascha as a fully ordained priest in less than two weeks. At the end of the Liturgy, Archbishop Nikitas appointed Oeconomos Nicholas Karafyllides as a Confessor, acknowledging his dedicated pastoral work and granting him the authority to offer spiritual guidance. The day concluded with a heartwarming reception organized by the Philanthropic Committee of Apostolos Louka and Estia, creating a memorable moment for the Greek Orthodox Community in Birmingham.
