Following reports of Israeli military leaders advocating for a ceasefire that would allow Hamas to remain in power, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue the conflict until the terror group is eradicated.
Netanyahu stated on Tuesday, “The war will end once Israel achieves all of its objectives, including the destruction of Hamas and the release of all of our hostages.”
A recent article in The New York Times revealed that Israeli military officials are considering a ceasefire with Hamas to secure the release of hostages and shift focus to potential threats from Hezbollah in the north. However, Netanyahu dismissed the idea of a premature ceasefire, emphasizing the need to eliminate Hamas completely.
Netanyahu’s remarks have highlighted a growing rift between him and the military leadership, with the Prime Minister accusing them of “defeatism” for considering a ceasefire before achieving all objectives.
This disagreement is not new, as tensions between Netanyahu and the military have been brewing over the direction of the war. The military spokesperson previously suggested that complete defeat of Hamas may not be feasible, prompting a sharp response from Netanyahu reaffirming the goal of destroying the terrorist group.
Despite some progress in weakening Hamas in certain areas, renewed fighting has erupted in other regions, underscoring the challenges of the ongoing conflict.
