A coalition of 99 Jewish clergy members from various denominations in the United States has issued a statement urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire deal to secure the release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas.
Rabbis from Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist, Renewal, and Secular Humanistic traditions have signed the statement, emphasizing the importance of bringing relief to those impacted by the conflict.
The clergy’s plea coincides with upcoming negotiations in Qatar, with pressure mounting from the United States and other mediators to reach a resolution and facilitate the safe return of all hostages.
Highlighting the Jewish value of Pidyon Shevuyim (redeeming captives), the statement stresses the urgency of the situation and the need to take decisive action to restore hope to the region.
While Hamas has indicated that it will not participate in the talks, there is hope for progress following Iran’s stance on a potential ceasefire and its decision regarding retaliatory actions against Israel.
The statement, titled “Bring Them Home Now,” emphasizes the prolonged duration of the conflict and the impact on hope within the Jewish community, underscoring the importance of reuniting the hostages with their families.
Notable signatories include Rabbi Angela Buchdahl of Central Synagogue in New York City, Rabba Sara Hurwitz of Yeshivat Maharat, and Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller of UCLA’s Hillel.
Concluding the statement, the clergy reaffirm their unwavering support for Israel’s well-being and call for swift action to bring an end to the hostage crisis and restore hope for the Jewish people.
