Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria met with Minister of Education and Science, Krasimir Valchev, at the Synodal Palace today. The discussion focused on the collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Orthodox Church of Bulgaria.
“We are currently working on curriculum changes to enhance the pedagogical aspect,” Minister Valchev explained. He emphasized the importance of integrating education into all subjects and proposed the introduction of a course on virtues and religions. This course, common in many European countries, would allow students to choose between studying religion or focusing on ethics, virtues, and values.
Patriarch Daniel commended Minister Valchev’s dedication and expressed the Orthodox Church of Bulgaria’s willingness to contribute experts to future reform discussions. The Patriarch highlighted the benefits of teaching virtues, history, and Christian art, aiming to provide children with moral and spiritual guidance to combat aggression in schools.
The meeting also acknowledged the success of the optional Orthodox Christianity course and specialized textbooks introduced in recent years. The Patriarch emphasized the importance of making this subject educational and offering advanced study options for interested students.
