Metropolitan Petru of Bessarabia delivered a message on Thursday commemorating the 107th anniversary of Bessarabia’s Union with Romania, highlighting the role of God in the history of Romanians across the Prut River and the bravery of their ancestors.
“Union, dear brothers and sisters, is not a closed chapter, but a sacred mission that must be continued,” said Metropolitan Petru.
Divine Union
“As we celebrate 107 years since the Union of Bessarabia with Romania, we express gratitude to God for this divine blessing, for the valor of our predecessors, and for the unity in spirit, faith, and identity that we maintain.”
The Metropolitan emphasized that the union was not a result of political motives or diplomatic strategies, “but a deep sense of connection—through language, blood, and soul.”
He described Bessarabia’s return to Romania as that of a prodigal daughter who had suffered but never forgot her roots. The spiritual revival that followed the union was evident in various aspects of life, from education to cultural activities.
Continuation of Unity
Metropolitan Petru stressed that the union is not just a historical event, but an ongoing mission:
“Union, beloved brothers and sisters, is not a closed chapter, but a sacred work that must be carried forward. It is nurtured through the efforts of each parish, educational institutions, youth engagement, and cultural preservation.”
He reaffirmed the Metropolis of Bessarabia’s role within the Romanian Orthodox Church, highlighting that faith and nationality transcend borders.
“The Metropolis of Bessarabia, as a vital part of the Romanian Orthodox Church, demonstrates that unity is strengthened through prayer, sacrifice, and service. Every endeavor contributes to this enduring bond,” he stated.
“Let us pray for our nation, honor our ancestors’ sacrifices, and continue the mission of unity and faith with hope and joy. Bessarabia will not only be a part of Romania but a cherished aspect of every Romanian’s heart,” concluded the metropolitan.
