On May 28, 2024, Metropolitan John of Zambia and Mozambique, with the blessing of Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and all Africa, organized a meeting at the Holy Metropolis in Lusaka. The purpose of the meeting was to plan two weeks of activities focused on promoting the Olympic spirit, education, and values.
Attendees included the President of the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ), the Coordinator of Parliament and Government, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYSA), the President of the Zambia Olympic Association (ZOA), and members of the Zambia / Hellenic Olympic Organizing Committee (ZHOOC) of the Archdiocese.
During the meeting, it was proposed to invite religious leaders, youth, and various organizations to participate in the event and sign a peace treaty for global peace.
At the end of the meeting, the Metropolitan presented the President of the National Olympic Committee of Zambia with a flag of the Hellenic Republic and the Olympic Games. He also gifted a pendant from the Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa and another from the Olympic Games.
All parties agreed on a twelve-day program of events and activities, including a visit from two gold medal winners from Greece to Zambia.
The Metropolitan requested that the Olympic Games’ birthplace flag be raised on the grounds to remind the new generation that “HELLAS” is where the Olympic Games originated.
