On Sunday, February 9, 2025, a memorial service was held in the National Garden to commemorate the 168th anniversary of Greece’s National Poet, Dionysios Solomos. Metropolitan John of Zambia and Mozambique, a native of Zakynthos, led the service to honor Solomos’ impact on the Greek language, poetry, and national identity.
Despite the winter weather and rain, the event was conducted with deep emotion and respect. The Choir of Saint George Karitsi, directed by maestro Mr. Nikolaos Valsamos, sang hymns, creating a solemn atmosphere. Dr. Eleni Rapti, an archaeologist and historian, delivered a speech emphasizing Solomos’ enduring legacy and the importance of his poetry in shaping Greek national consciousness.
Wreaths were placed by presidents and representatives of Ionian cultural associations, as well as by Ms. Eleni Pylarinou, the president of the Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians. The ceremony was attended by prominent figures from literature, the arts, science, sports, and the artistic community, as well as friends from Greece and abroad who paid their respects by placing flowers at the bust of Greece’s great poet.
