Metropolitan Antony of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, has accused Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of supporting the “ecclesiastical schism in Ukraine.” In an interview with TV Hram, the media outlet of the Serbian Orthodox Church and No. 2 outlet of the Russian Church, Metropolitan Antony emphasized the close ties between the Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches, highlighting their “absolute unanimity and full mutual understanding in all matters concerning inter-Orthodox relations.”
Drawing parallels between Ukraine and Kosovo, Metropolitan Antony mentioned that both nations face similar challenges. He expressed his concern over the recent ban on Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia from entering Kosovo and shared that Patriarch Kirill of Moscow had sent a letter of support to Patriarch Porfirije.
Metropolitan Antony highlighted the “difficult situation” faced by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) under Metropolitan Onufriy, claiming that it is undergoing persecution that is being overlooked by the global community. He called on the international community to pay attention to the events in Ukraine, expressing disappointment over the lack of support or understanding received.
He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the Serbian Church, stating, “The Russian people are grateful for the courage shown by the Serbian Church in standing by our brothers who are facing persecution.”
Metropolitan Antony strongly criticized Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, accusing him of causing division within the Orthodox world. He denounced the recognition of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) as contrary to the canons and Orthodox ecclesiology. He specifically criticized the ordination of Metropolitan Epifaniy of Ukraine, questioning the legitimacy of the process.
He reiterated the Russian Orthodox Church’s refusal to accept the Tomos of Autocephaly granted to the OCU, emphasizing the commitment to upholding canonical tradition. “We all swore to live by the canons of the Church when we were ordained,” he stated.
Metropolitan Antony emphasized the solidarity of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian people with Serbia, particularly regarding the Kosovo issue. He assured Serbia that Kosovo, as an integral part of the country, will reclaim its rightful place and mentioned the support of the Russian state on the international stage.
In conclusion, Metropolitan Antony thanked the Serbian Orthodox Church and Patriarch Porfirije for their unwavering support and called on all Orthodox believers to remain united in faith and love for the Church, urging them to stand firm in the face of challenges.
