Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden delivered a moving homily at St. George’s Cathedral in Stockholm on Sunday, July 21, 2024, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. He honored the victims of the Cypriot tragedy and emphasized the importance of remembering their sacrifices.
Drawing from the Gospel of Matthew, Metropolitan Cleopas highlighted the significance of humility, using the example of the Roman officer who approached Jesus with humility and faith. He stressed that humility is essential for overcoming self-centeredness and building connections with others and with God.
The Metropolitan referenced Saint Isaac the Syrian’s teachings on humility as a source of strength and clarity. He emphasized that humility attracts God’s grace and blessing, enabling individuals to fulfill their potential.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Sweden, Solon Savvas, attended the service, showing solidarity with the community’s commitment to remember and learn from the past. Metropolitan Cleopas expressed hope for the reunification of Cyprus and a prosperous future for all Cypriots through adherence to International Law.
The service concluded with a prayer for peace and justice, uniting the congregation in their shared aspirations for a harmonious future. The attendees echoed their amen, reflecting their collective hope for a better tomorrow.
