Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden officiated the Divine Liturgy on the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee at the Holy Church of St. George in Roskilde, Denmark.
He emphasized the significance of the Triodion period, which marks the beginning of a time of repentance and prayer in preparation for Easter. This period helps believers cultivate true humility and repentance, essential for their spiritual journey.
Sermon of Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden
Addressing the Ambassador of Greece to Copenhagen, Mr. Fragkiskos Kostellenios, esteemed guests, and the congregation, Metropolitan Cleopas highlighted the importance of the Triodion period in guiding Orthodox Christians towards Easter with faith, love, and humility.
He referenced Professor Paschos of the University of Athens, who described the Triodion as a spiritual ladder leading believers to the glorious Resurrection of Christ. The Canon of Matins for this Sunday reflected on the humility of the Publican contrasted with the pride of the Pharisee.
Metropolitan Cleopas elaborated on the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican, emphasizing the humility and repentance of the Publican as the path to justification before God. He quoted the Prophet Joel’s call to return to the Lord with fasting, weeping, and mourning.
He encouraged the congregation to embark on a blessed journey into the Holy and Great Lent with a heart full of repentance and humility.
