Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden delivered a homily on August 25, 2024, at Wilderness Hotel Nellim, Finland, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the resettlement of the Skolt Sámi people. Representing Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, he highlighted the resilience, culture, and faith of the Skolt Sámi, who have been part of the Orthodox Christian Church since the missionary work of St. Tryphon of Pechenga in the 16th century.
The homily emphasized the universal nature of the Church, welcoming all people regardless of ethnicity or language, and spreading Christ’s teachings. Metropolitan Cleopas drew parallels between the struggles of the Skolt Sámi and the challenges faced by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, noting their shared history and faith. Despite hardships, both the Skolt Sámi and the Church have shown strength and growth, reflecting the ecumenical presence and resilience of the Church.
Representing Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Metropolitan Cleopas conveyed blessings and wishes at the anniversary event, celebrating the Skolt Sámi’s enduring faith and culture. The Skolt Sámi’s presence in the Orthodox Church for over four centuries exemplifies the apostolic and catholic nature of the Church, which embraces all people and spreads the Gospel worldwide.
The event also recognized the challenges faced by minority groups like the Skolt Sámi, who have endured forced relocations and hardships. Metropolitan Cleopas highlighted the Skolt Sámi’s courage and endurance, attributing it to their faith and shared history with the Orthodox Church. The event served as a reminder of the Church’s mission to spread Christ’s teachings and unite all people in the faith.
Rejoicing in the fruit of the Holy Spirit, I stand in solidarity with our Orthodox Christian brothers and sisters of the Skolt Sámi community, offering prayers of gratitude to the Lord for blessing their resettlement and preserving their unique customs and traditions within our shared liturgical life.
I extend the heartfelt congratulations and blessings of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on this significant occasion, praying that through the intercession of the Holy Evangelists, Apostles, and the Theotokos, the Skolt Sami people may continue to receive blessings from Jesus Christ and spread the Gospel to future generations.
As we look forward to the upcoming election of the new Archbishop of Helsinki and All Finland in November, I pray for the guidance of God in selecting a worthy successor to Archbishop Leo, who has shown unwavering support to our Finnish parish in Stockholm. We are grateful for his dedication and the presence of his clergy in our community.
Your Eminence, we are thankful for your love and care, and we pray for your continued health and well-being. Thank you.
