Metropolitan Petru has issued a message encouraging citizens of the Republic of Moldova to actively participate in the upcoming presidential election.
In addition to selecting a new president, Moldovan citizens will also have the opportunity to vote on a constitutional amendment that could potentially lead to the country’s accession to the European Union.
Metropolitan Petru of Bessarabia emphasized the importance of civic participation as both a civic responsibility and a fulfillment of the Christian calling to contribute to the common good.
He stated, “Just as God has granted us freedom, He calls us to use it in the service of good, truth, peace, and justice.”
“The act of voting is an expression of love for our neighbors, families, nation, and the Church. It is not just for ourselves but for future generations to come,” he added.
“A well-organized country, governed by Christian principles, is essential for preserving our faith, traditions, culture, and Romanian identity,” he continued.
Future directions
Metropolitan Petru also emphasized the significance of Romania and the European sphere as cultural and spiritual reference points for Moldova.
He mentioned, “Our belonging to the European space is crucial for preserving and strengthening our Romanian and European identity.”
“Our vote can serve as an act of enlightenment and a blessing for the future of our country, following the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ to be the ‘light of the world’ (Matthew 5:14),” he stated.
He encouraged citizens to actively participate in public life and to not remain indifferent to the fate of their fellow citizens or the future of the country.
“Let us use this opportunity to reaffirm our unity of spirit with Romania and Europe, sharing the same vision for the future,” he urged.
“Regardless of political preferences, the important thing is to participate, cast your vote, and contribute to the common good,” Metropolitan Petru concluded.
Guidelines from the Holy Synod
In light of the upcoming electoral periods in both Romania and Moldova in 2024, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church has reminded clergy members that they are prohibited from publicly expressing political opinions or engaging in electoral campaigns.
The next presidential elections in Romania are scheduled for November 24 and December 8, 2024.
