On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, the Metropolis of Zambia and Mozambique, together with the Honorary Consulate General of Greece in Lusaka, held a special event to celebrate two Greek Olympian champions, Athanasia Tsoumeleka and Georgios Tselilis. The occasion was graced by diplomatic officials, distinguished guests, members of the Olympic Committee of Zambia, athletes, journalists, and a large audience.
The event kicked off with a warm welcome from Metropolitan John, who spoke about the values of the Olympic Ideal and its role as a guiding principle in life. He emphasized the importance of this ideal in deterring negative behaviors among young people, such as violence and substance abuse. Metropolitan John also highlighted the significance of the Olympic truce, a tradition dating back to ancient Greece, in promoting global peace amidst current conflicts.
A moment of silence was observed, with attendees holding lit candles and olive branches while offering prayers for peace. Young girls in traditional attire carried the Olympic flame and performed Greek dances, adding a cultural element to the solemn proceedings.
The two Greek Olympians, visibly touched by the event, shared their experiences and the essence of the Olympic Games, inspiring all those present. They then planted two olive trees, symbolizing peace, next to the bust of Dionysios Solomos in the Metropolis area.
The event concluded with demonstrations of the athletes’ sports—weightlifting and race walking—by the Olympians. Attendees enjoyed traditional Greek cuisine and participated in Greek and local dances, ending the evening with joy and camaraderie.
This unforgettable event underscored the timeless values of the Olympic Ideal and fostered a sense of unity and peace.
