The Benevolent Brotherhood of the Ladies of Makrochori was originally founded in 1906 during the prosperous period of the Greek Orthodox community in Constantinople. It started with 20 members and an 8-member board of directors.
The Brotherhood’s philanthropic activities included preserving the sanctity of the Holy Church, overseeing the creation and maintenance of sacred vestments, repairing sacred items, enhancing the cemetery, managing the Girls’ School decorations, providing assistance to families in need, supporting children’s education, aiding in job placement for daughters, and organizing cultural and community events at the Makrochori Community Hall. These efforts culminated in the Christmas Charity Dinner and the Festive Dinner for the Feast of St. George.
In 2004, the Brotherhood faced challenges and paused its operations. However, it was revitalized in November 2024 with the guidance of Elder Metropolitan Apostolos of Derkoi. The new Board of Directors comprises seven members and operates under a revised Charter tailored to meet the current needs of the Greek Orthodox community in Constantinople.
