The Orthodox Church today commemorates Hieromartyr Basil of Ancyra, Saint Drosis, daughter of Emperor Trajan, and Holy New Martyr Euthymius.
Saint Euthymius, also known as Eleutherius, was born in Demitsana, Peloponnese, as the fifth child of Panagiotis and Maria, a pious couple. He received his education in Greece and later pursued higher studies in Constantinople.
After working as a merchant in Bucharest and leading a life of debauchery, Euthymius repented and sought solace on Mount Athos, where he confessed his sins to Patriarch Gregory V. He then embraced monasticism, taking the name Euthymius.
In 1814, filled with remorse for his past actions, Euthymius publicly proclaimed his Orthodox Christian faith in Constantinople, renouncing Mohammed before a vizier. This led to his brutal torture and eventual beheading.
