Today, the Church commemorates the lives of Venerable John and Symeon the Fool for Christ. Both saints, close friends from Edessa, Syria, embarked on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in AD 518. After visiting the Holy Lands, they chose the ascetic path and sought refuge at the monastery of Saint Gerasimus of the Jordan, under the guidance of the wise elder Nikon.
Following their spiritual master’s blessing, they secluded themselves in the deserted area of the Dead Sea, where they dedicated forty years to ascetic practices. Symeon later returned to Jerusalem, where he led many Jews and heretical Christians to embrace Christianity through the grace of the Holy Spirit.
Upon returning to his homeland, Symeon selflessly cared for the suffering and impoverished, exhibiting deep humility and simplicity. Despite his virtuous actions, which he disguised to avoid recognition, many perceived him as a fool.
Symeon peacefully passed away in his homeland in old age, leaving behind a legacy of humility and devotion to God’s will. Both saints serve as shining examples of faith and selflessness.
