The Church honors Saint Emmelia today, who was the mother of Saint Basil the Great. She passed away in a monastery where she resided with her daughter Makrina. Additionally, Saint Isaac the Confessor, Abbot of Dalmatian Monastery, is also remembered.
Saint Isaac, originally from Syria, lived during the reign of King Valens, a supporter of Arianism and opponent of Orthodoxy. One of the king’s harsh decrees was the prohibition of Orthodox believers from using their churches.
Around the year 364 AD, as Valens prepared for a campaign against the threatening Goths, Saint Isaac, guided by divine inspiration, approached the king. He urged Valens to return the churches to the Orthodox for God’s blessing and victory over their enemies, warning of dire consequences otherwise. Sadly, the king ignored his pleas and met his end at the hands of the barbarians.
Saint Isaac spent his later years at Dalmatian Monastery, named after his successor Dalmatus, where he peacefully departed to the Lord.
