Today Our Church Honors Venerable Paul of Thebes, Venerable Ioannis Calabytes, and Monk-Martyr Pansophius
Venerable Ioannis, also known as Calabytes, was born in Constantinople in the 5th century AD to Senator Eutropius and Theodora. Despite his affluent background, Ioannis chose to dedicate his life to the Christian faith, much to the dismay of his parents. In order to pursue his calling as a monk, he left his family and joined the Monastery of the Akoimitoi.
After some time, feeling remorse for causing his parents grief, Ioannis returned home in disguise as a monk. His humility and kindness were so profound that his parents welcomed him into their home without recognizing him. He resided in a hut in their garden, where he lived a hermitic life and eventually succeeded in bringing his parents to Christ before revealing his true identity and passing away peacefully.
