Our Holy Church today commemorates the Venerables Auxentius, Abraham, and Maron, and the Hieromartyrs, Bishops Philemon and Philip of Gaza.
St. Auxentius lived in Constantinople and served as a scholar at the court of Emperor Theodosius the Younger. He was known for his deep piety, biblical knowledge, virtue, physical strength, and moral integrity. His desire for the ascetic life led him to become a monk, leaving behind the honors and positions of Constantinople to live a life of asceticism in a remote mountain.
Despite his solitude, he continued to study the Bible and was recognized for his exceptional virtues and theological knowledge. He was even invited as a simple monk to the Fourth Ecumenical Council in Chalcedon in 451 A.D. to denounce the teachings of Archimandrite Eutyches and Archbishop Nestorios.
Venerable Auxentius received many visitors in his hermitage, offering comfort and healing to those who sought him out. Christians also came to show their respect, bringing him gifts and food which he selflessly distributed to the poor.
In his old age, Venerable Auxentius passed away, leaving a legacy of true sacrifice and a life worthy of veneration.
