Today, the Church honors the lives of three remarkable saints: Martyr Pelagia, Saint Hilary of the desert, the Wonderworker, and Saint Athanasius of Corinth.
Martyr Pelagia, originally from Tarsus, Cilicia, later resided in Rome. After receiving a divine vision, she embraced Christianity and sought baptism from the Bishop of Rome. Despite her mother’s objections, Pelagia remained steadfast in her faith, even causing her fiancé’s death due to his sorrow over her conversion.
Emperor Diocletian, infuriated by Pelagia’s commitment to Christianity, sentenced her to death. She bravely faced martyrdom by being placed in a burning bronze ox, giving her life as a testimony to her faith.
Saint Pelagia’s story serves as a testament to the courage and holiness of Christian women throughout history, exemplifying unwavering faith and devotion to Christ even in the face of persecution.
