The Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Thomas the Apostle today.
Saint Thomas was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, hailing from a family of fishermen. He is particularly honored on the Sunday of St. Thomas, also known as the Second Sunday or Antipascha.
Initially skeptical of the resurrection of Jesus, Thomas came to believe after encountering the Risen Christ and touching His wounds. He famously exclaimed, “My Lord and my God,” upon realizing the truth of Christ’s resurrection. Jesus’ response to Thomas emphasized the importance of faith without seeing.
Following the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Thomas obeyed Christ’s command to spread the Gospel to all nations. He journeyed to Parthia, Media, Persia, and eventually to India, where he was martyred for his faith. Thomas preached the Word of God and converted many, including King Misdeus’ family, leading to his arrest and eventual martyrdom.
