The Church honors St. Martin the Confessor, Pope of Rome, Martyrs Dada, Maximus, Eleutherius of Persia, Zoilus, Theodosius, Theodosia the Princess, and Gerontios.
St. Martin, originally from Central Italy, became pope in AD 649 during a challenging time when the church was dealing with the Monotheistic sect.
Unfortunately, the Church of Constantinople, led by Patriarch Paul II and Emperor Constantius II, had also embraced Monothelitism, causing a rift in the church.
Pope Martinus of Rome made efforts to persuade the Patriarch and the emperor to return to Orthodox doctrine through letters and envoys, but they remained firm in their support of Monothelitism. The emperor eventually had the saint arrested and exiled to Cherson.
Saint Martin passed away peacefully in AD 655 in Cherson.
