Today we honor the memory of Saint Irene, the Abbess of the monastery of Chrysovalantou in Constantinople.
Saint Irene was born in Cappadocia in the early 9th century A.D. Known for her beauty and kindness, she caught the eye of an imperial officer who proposed to her. However, her visit to the Monastery of Chrysovalantou on the way to the palace changed her destiny.
Impacted by the ascetic life and the devotion of the nuns, Saint Irene decided to join the monastery and lead a life of spiritual struggle. Her dedication and progress led her to become the Abbess after the passing of her predecessor.
Saint Irene Chrysovalantou was blessed with the gift of miracles as a result of her unwavering faith and virtue. Today, many believers seek her intercession in times of need.
