On January 5, the Orthodox Church commemorates Martyr Theopemptus and Martyr Theonas, one day before the Feast of Epiphany.
Saint Theopemptus, a bishop during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, bravely confessed his faith in Jesus Christ despite the decree of persecution against Christians. He endured cruel tortures and performed miracles before being beheaded. His unwavering faith inspired Theonas, a former sorcerer, to also embrace Christianity. The pagans buried Theonas alive, but he met a glorious death and ascended to Heaven.
Today, the Orthodox Church holds services such as Orthros, the Great Despotic Hours, and the Great Vespers of the Theophany, following the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great. The Great Blessing of the Waters on the Eve of Theophany is also conducted.
