The Orthodox Church honors Saints Luke, Peter the Reverend, and the Martyrs Eupsychios and Sozon today.
It is also the Forefeast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
Martyr Sozon, who lived in the 3rd century AD in Asia Minor, was originally a pagan shepherd but converted to Christianity and took the name Sozon. He was known for his virtuous life, study of Scriptures, and preaching of the Gospel.
One day, he defied a pagan temple by cutting off the hand of a gold and silver statue, selling it, and giving the proceeds to the poor. When the ruler of the region persecuted Christians in response, Sozon boldly confessed his faith in Christ and endured torture before his martyrdom.
Today, the Church focuses on the upcoming Great Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, whose birth brought joy to humanity as she gave birth to the Son of God and Savior. Her obedience contrasted with Eve’s disobedience, bringing blessings to all.
