The Orthodox Church commemorates today Prophet Zachariah.
The Holy Prophet Zachariah, a priest married to Elizabeth, was childless. During a church service, Archangel Gabriel appeared to him, foretelling the birth of a son named John to Elizabeth.
Zachariah doubted due to their old age and was struck speechless by the angel. However, when John was born and named, Zachariah’s speech returned, and he praised the Lord.
Zachariah received this gift from God due to his righteousness and obedience to His commandments. John, their son, became the Prophets’ first, the Baptist, and the Forerunner of Jesus Christ.
God’s apparent punishment for Zachariah’s disbelief ultimately healed him. When God tests His people, He remains faithful to His promises of salvation and mercy.
